More UK radio frequencies to be licensed out

The UK’s Office of Communications would be auctioning off more radio frequencies in 2007 for use in mobile communications, according to the BBC.

A 40 megahertz range of the airwaves will be sold next year, for use in wireless and mobile communications.

Possible uses for the spectrum include mobile TV services using DVB-H (Digital Video Broadcasting - Handheld) or DMB (Digital Multimedia Broadcasting) technologies and broadband wireless access using WiMAX technology.

It’s great to have WiMax and digital broadcasts, but 2007 may be too late, if telcos would want a good chunk of the wireless Internet or digital TV pie. OfCom had better consider pushing up its selling of spectrum licenses to an earlier date if it wants telcos and broadcast companies to get on with developing their respective services in anticipation for a wireless broadband and digital television boom in the next few months.
