Cingular Wireless has announced that 64.5 million text messages were sent during this last season of American Idol, easily breaking their old record of 41.5 million. American Idol is easily the most interactive show on television, and those text messages weren’t just votes for contestants. They also included trivia, sweepstakes entries, TXT chats, fan club, and vote reminders. It’s altogether possible that American Idol is singlehandedly responsible for creating the ubiquity of text messaging in America.
