EU planning to scrap roaming charges

BBC reports that the European Commission is planning a move to ban telcos from imposing roaming charges for travellers using their mobile phones to call while outside of their home network.

The Commission said it would draft a law to crack down on “unjustified” high charges for using mobile phones abroad.

The proposals seek to scrap all roaming charges for receiving a call when travelling abroad in the EU.

They also aim to make the cost of calls made abroad the same as those made in the user’s country of origin.

Europe is one of the more interconnected areas in terms of mobile networks. You usually don’t even have to pre-register with your own network to use your mobile in another country, as long as your home telco has interconnection agreements with networks abroad. With this move by the EC, Europe’s telcos will be akin to one big network, where you can have your pick of networks, and call/SMS prices won’t be exorbitant if you were in a different country.
